As the country enters what will cumulatively be the 24th week of the alcohol ban (in one form or another) since lockdown restrictions were first put in place, our local wine industry needs our support. We round up three of our favourite cellar essentials — from the easy-drinking to the special occasion bottles — to buy now and receive once restrictions are lifted.

The bubbles | Colmant Cap Classique

Colmant Cap Classique — the powerhouse team of Jean-Phillipe Colmant and winemaker extraordinaire Paul Gerber — are producing some of the best bubbles in SA right now. It’s remarkable MCC through and through with elegance, finesse and precision evident in every bubble. If you’re new to the brand try out the discovery case which offers MCC lovers a chance to explore the Colmant range including their exquisite Blanc de Blanc — the flagship of their portfolio — 100% Chardonnay bubbly is the epitome of elegance and finesse. They’re also currently running deals on their impeccable signature-blend, brut reserve (quite frankly a bargain at R199.00 a bottle) which will carry on till restrictions are lifted.

The white | Beaumont New Baby 2018

Beaumont New Baby is an exquisitely intriguing white blend from the famed Bot River farm and is a worthy addition for all those looking for a serious white wine for their collection. A unique blend of chenin blanc, sauvignon blanc, sémillon, chardonnay and colombard (all the white varietals grown on the farm) coupled with the addition of barrel fermentation results in a gorgeously complex and finessed wine. It’s a bottle that delivers incredible depth and a textured weighty mouthfeel, which sees citrus and stone fruit mingling with hints of spice leading to a creamy, rich long-lingering finish. Buy now to drink when the lockdown lifts but know that you can easily stick it away for a good few years to come.

The red | Vilafonte Seriously Old Dirt 2019

The seriously delicious, Seriously Old Dirt by Vilafonte is a must-have for every cellar. Coined as the “everyday Vilafonte”, it is the premium winery’s second label — but I always feel calling it that does it a great disservice — and is named after the ancient vilafontes soils in which their vines are grown. The rigorous blending of their individual, iconic Series wines results in certain barrels being not fully used and these go towards Seriously Old Dirt.

Make no mistake it’s a wine that can very much stand up for itself. As they head towards celebrating 10 years (with their current bottling), the 2019 vintage release arrives in the form of a cabernet sauvignon driven blend rounded off with small percentages of malbec, merlot and cabernet franc. It’s an absolutely beautiful wine, fruit forward (the likes of black plum and ripe cherry) with an accompanying minerality, superb balancing acidity and remarkable structure.
