While their new campaign featuring professional surfers Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons might be focused on sunnier climes, the new Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57 Pastel Paradise Capsule Collection is more about a positive attitude and an appreciation of fine watchmaking, than a seasonal fashion statement.

The original Superocean diver’s watch was launched in 1957 for professional and recreational divers, taking its name from the superocean that once surrounded Pangaea before continental drift began millions of years ago. Breitling preserved the spirit of the original model with the Superocean Heritage line, which blends a timeless look with cutting-edge technology.

In 2017, Breitling updated the design, but retained the unique character of this instantly recognisable watch. These divers received a new stainless-steel bezel with an ultra-hard, hi-tech ceramic ring making them both scratch-proof and extremely shock-resistant. While elegantly executed, at 44mm in diameter they certainly make a bold statement on even the most manly wrist.

The Superocean Heritage ’57 was introduced last year as a tribute to the original from 1957 and the laid-back lifestyle of 1960s surf culture. Its “smaller” 42mm case, shorter lugs and a thinner profile also improved its wearability. Other features carried over from the original were a concave bidirectional ceramic bezel and a dial featuring oversized circular indices.

This year the focus has shifted to women’s watches. A limited edition of five Pastel Paradise novelties are presented for the first time with a women’s size 38mm stainless steel case. The palette includes a summer white, aquamarine, mint green, and iced latte — all with tone-on-tone dials, bezels, and straps.

A show-stopping rainbow tangerine version has its bold hour markers and hands coated in Super-LumiNova, with dashes of yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, red, and orange. Their quick-exchange system for swapping out the Saffiano calfskin leather straps, encourages self-expression and are also available in lemon and raspberry sorbet.

These new watches are powered by the same COSC-certified Breitling Caliber 10 as the men’s models, with a power reserve of about 42 hours. Elegant yet casual, with water resistance up to 100m, they’re perfect for a woman who cares about her style even while at the beach.

With all new product pre-sold to the trade already, Breitling CEO Georges Kern confessed during the presentation last week that he already regrets his decision to limit production to the  European summer. However, he said that at least women who manage to secure one of these will be very happy knowing that it would be “very, very exclusive”.
