As a part of our coverage this year, Wanted has taken a dive into the studios, and minds, of Decorex andSA’s premier designers. In discussion with these creators, we asked for designs of their own that continue to inspire them.

Studio Lloyd is a Cape Town-based design studio founded in 2016. Their innovative ideas for spaces and beauty have earned them international acclaim, such as winning the Prestige Design Awards UK 2021/2022.

1. Amoeba

The Amoeba light sculpture is located at the Skotnes Restaurant in the Norval Foundation in Cape Town. Its organic shape compliments the long seating arrangement and adds depth to the space. It is made out of Diamond Grey marine-grade multifilament rope, nine warm dimmable LED bulbs, wired brass detailing and high-quality brass fittings.

“We love this design due to its scale and detail. We often meet clients at the Norval Foundation to reference our work and for us to visit the piece once in a while. We always check on quality and are satisfied that the design looks exactly the same as on the day of installation in 2018.”

2. Twin Sculptures

The almost identical twin pieces are located in a luxury private island resort called North Island (Ile du Nord) in Seychelles. The twins complement the main dining area of the resort and fill a well-curated space with high-raised ceilings and a thatched roof. The pieces are made of Jasper Grey and Opal Beige multifilament rope and six dimmable LED bulbs in one and eight in the other. The mix of rope colours and the organic shape of the twin pieces add to the soft design of the resort and illuminate their open space with warm light.

“We do look back at this design regularly as we are very happy with how it turned out, dressed and curated the space so appropriately. We would love to create another long draping piece similar in size to the Twin Sculptures in the future.”

3. Floor Mats and Carpets

Our beautiful simplistic floor mats and carpets are the perfect addition for an outdoor shower, entrance, pool area, sauna, spa area, or seating arrangement. They are made from durable Studio Lloyd’s signature material that is resistant to mildew and UV light. The properties of the multifilament marine rope have been designed to be extremely all-weather durable, quick-drying and colour-fast. The floor mats are highly suitable for outdoor and indoor use and the crochet texture adds a reflexology benefit while used barefoot. Each carpet varies in stitch style to make something different, each time.

“Our floor mats and carpets might be the most simple products we offer but they are definitely two of our favourites. We have tested them in our own homes and can proudly say that they turned out exactly how we wanted them. One thing we both said we needed to change was the existing never fully dry cotton floor mats in our bathrooms. They dry extremely quickly and no damp bathroom floor mats and outdoor rugs are around any more.”

Three of our designs that inspired us the most

1. Molecular

Molecular is one of our oldest designs that inspires us the most. It is so unique in its existence that it always reminds us to create exclusive functional art pieces for everyone. Every single design that leaves our studio will never be replicated again which ensures that every client receiving our work will always be the only person to own that specific design. Molecular is mysterious, simple and unique yet engaging, complex and relatable. Furthermore, the success we had with Molecular is empowering for us in the terms that we have used it many times to showcase our work to attract new clients.

2. Maoni Daybed

The Maoni Daybed is part of our new Sayari Collection that launched on May 16. This launch means a lot to us as we have been working on developing our first outdoor daybed for many months. The dream of creating outdoor furniture has always been in our minds, yet we felt the need to compile as much feedback from clients, industry professionals and design lovers to be able to create a piece that is truly unique on the market. We wanted to create a piece of outdoor furniture that is a contemporary ode to Africa as it highlights the handicrafting aspect of traditional African design yet follows a modern and minimalistic approach.

3. House Goetsch

The House Goetsch sculpture is a memorable piece for us as we were given a challenge and moved out of our comfort zone. Our client asked us if we could mimic a tree stem table below the sculpture in its frame design. The outcome of the sculptures was a perfect replication of the natural stem shape and turned out beautifully. We added a lot of copper and beige detailing for advanced aspects of the design. It was empowering for us and our design studio to create something as exclusive as this design and to satisfy our client beyond his expectations. We truly love the design and are 100% satisfied with how it turned out.
