Irreverent, bright, naively sophisticated — Georgina Gratrix’s paintings feature expressive, impasto brushwork and humorous yet uncomfortable distortions of figures, objects, and landscapes in a saturated and exuberant colour palette. Her sharp and amusing social commentary is now on show at the Norval Foundation until 31 May 2021. The Mexican-born South African artist’s first retrospective in a South African museum is curated by guest curator Liese van der Watt. The Reunion brings together 27 major artworks by Gratrix, completed between 2011 and 2020, and is a must-see.

The Reunion: Georgina Gratrix will run until May 31 2021. Visit the Norval Foundation for more information.
