Review | Sports to streaming, the Hisense U7H Quantum ULED 4K TV does it all with style
Beautiful and bezel-less, this elegant gadget ticks all the boxes you'd expect for a premium smart TV experience and then some
Beautiful and bezel-less. That’s the first thing you’ll notice about the elegant-looking Hisense U7H Quantum 120Hz ULED 4K TV. The 55″ model we reviewed was impossibly thin, surprisingly light and came with a modern, metal front-facing stand.
It goes without saying that the ULED display of the U7H is incredibly detailed. The picture quality feels lifelike, no matter what you’re watching, due to something Hisense call ‘Hi-View display’. Like the recently reviewed U6H, the U7H is equipped with its own chip set with a built-in, AI-HDR picturesque scene engine. This means, scene by scene, the U7H uses the latest artificial intelligence tech (like deep learning) to make the picture quality the best it can be.
What will you experience? A faster display without a lag that makes all the difference to gamers. You’ll also appreciate the U7H’s full function HDMI 2.1, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), incredible 120Hz VRR and FreeSync Premium, AMD’s superior screen tearing solution that dynamically adjusts and synchronises the monitor refresh rate and outputted frames per second so that there’s no screen tearing whatsoever.
Not a gamer? Not a problem, you’ll still be blown away by the U7H’s Quantum Dot wide colour gamut and Full Array Local Dimming.
Exceptional performance
The brightness of any screen is usually measured in nits. A good computer display has about 300 nits and a TV that reaches 500 nits of brightness is considered to be really good. And then there’s the U7H — with 600 nits, it’s nothing short of exceptional.
Thanks to Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the U7H also sounds as good as it looks.
Filmmaker Mode keeps the aspect ratio, frame rate and colour the way the filmmakers intended for an authentic cinematic experience
One of the viewing features of the U7H we love is Filmmaker Mode. Here, Hisense keeps the aspect ratio, frame rate and colour the way the filmmakers intended. It’s incredibly authentic as it disables any post-processing and you get to sit back and enjoy a cinematic experience.
If you’re serious about watching the game, you’ll also love Sports Mode (and the fact that this particular TV is the official model of the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022). The native 120Hz refresh rate of the U7H removes “noises” using a dynamic algorithm that has been tailored to moving objects. It also enhances surround sound effects so you’ll feel like you’re there — and the crowd goes wild — but the commentator stays clear and focused.
You're in control
There’s a meme going around that says if you want a high-end TV to feel less than premium, then all you need to do is use the remote to start typing. Frustrating? Old-fashioned? Can’t seem to get those long, log-in passwords for streaming services correct? This is clearly something Hisense took into consideration because, while the remote itself is well-designed (we like the non-slip matt coating on the back), it offers a hands-free voice commands function.
Then there's the VIDAA app. VIDAA is Hisense’s Smart TV operating system, which allows you to can customise the U7H and make it your own. It's also fast and a lot less buggy than some of the other Smart TV operating systems we’ve tried.
With Hisense's free VIDAA app, you can control the U7H using your smartphone — signing into a streaming service and searching for a show has never been easier
Once you’ve downloaded the VIDAA app and created a free account, you’ll be able to control the U7H using your smartphone — turning the TV on, signing into a streaming service and searching for a show has never been easier because you can simply type what you want.
Speaking of which, you can use the VIDAA app to access the app store, where you can download streaming services or radio stations that don’t have a dedicated hotkey on the remote. The app is also where you’ll find additional personalisation features such as VIDAA art — who wouldn’t want to take advantage of the U7H’s incredible display to show off a bespoke artwork?
Even if you lose the remote, or if you happen to have more than one Hisense TV in your home, you’ll be able to use the same app to connect to and control different TVs from one place. Brilliant.
Price-wise, the U7H starts at R15,999 for the 55” and goes up to R39,999 for the 85”. Regardless of which screen size you opt for, you can be confident that the U7H ticks all the boxes you expect for a premium, smart TV experience and then some. From gaming to sports, streaming and anything in between, the Hisense U7H Quantum ULED 4K TV does it all — and it does it with style.
