Multifaceted, vibrantly coloured and often created on a mammoth scale, there's no mistaking one of Richard Orlinski's pop art-inspired animal sculptures — and the same can be said of the signature timepieces he's created in collaboration with Hublot.

One of France's best-selling artists, Orlinski first joined hands with the premium Swiss watch brand in 2017, when he was invited to reimagine its Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph.

As a nod to the sharp-angled forms of his iconic artworks, the watch he designed featured a striking faceted case and dial, and instead of a conventional round bezel, a unique dodecagon-shaped one.

The resulting timepiece was the first in the Hublot Classic Fusion Orlinski series, an ever-growing collection of watches with a distinctively “edgy” design identity.

The six newest additions to this series are smaller in scale than their predecessors at Orlinski's behest. The sculptor wanted to appeal to new audiences by giving his designs an elegant, feminine, jewelry-like effect.

These 40mm timepieces feature cases in polished titanium or 18k King Gold, which offset their faceted black dials beautifully.

Four of the six models have diamond-studded bezels and cases that are either fully or partially embellished with more of these sparking stones. The remaining two are unadorned, giving them a more subtle glamour.

Understated straps in matt black rubber are the ideal finishing touch — and one which pays tribute to what Orlinski admirably describes as the brand's “truly innovative spirit”. After all, in 1980, Hublot was the first to dare to combine rubber and gold in a single timepiece.

It's this inventiveness, together with the shared “desire to challenge convention”, that Orlinski believes has made his partnership with Hublot so successful.
