BLACK PORTRAITURE[S] III: Reinventions: Strains of Histories and Cultures is the seventh conference in a series of conversations about imaging the black body. According to the organisers, presenters at the conference will engage on a range of topics such as biennales, the global art market, politics, tourism, sites of memory, Afrofuturism, fashion, dance, music, film, art, and photography.

While the conference takes place at Turbine Hall, Newtown, several cultural events have sprung up alongside the official talkshop. Here’s our pick of what not to miss this weekend in Jozi:

ARTNOIR, a global collective of artists and culturalists, will be hosting a series of activations and discussions. Download their Jozi guide for the weekend.

The Evidence of Things Not Seen is an exhibition of works by artists of colour drawn from the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) collection. The exhibition explores various forms of identity and addresses issues of feminism, queerness, revolution and culture in Black identity. The exhibition opens on Saturday 19th November.

Gallery Momo in Parktown North is hosting a party on Friday 18th November, called Black Experience Vol. 1, with DJ Kenzhero and ThaMuzik.

IN CONTEXT 2016: AFRICANS IN AMERICA at Goodman Gallery, is conceptualised and curated by US artist Hank Willis Thomas and Liza Essers, director of Goodman Gallery. Africans in America speaks to the flows, exchanges and continuities between Africa and the United States.
