PANERAI
The Panerai “Traits” series of mini movies have been inspiring examples of the pursuit of excellence, but none more than this tribute to the Italian chef Massimo Bottura.
Bottura’s restaurant in Modena, Italy – Osteria Francescana – was named the world’s best restaurant in 2016 and he continues to come up with remarkable ideas to change our way of thinking about food. My favourite was when, at the Rio Olympics, he led the way in setting up a community kitchen concept called Food for Soul, to fight food waste.
For this and other innovative ideas, Bottura has been recognised by Panerai. He appears in the movie wearing one of the most innovative Panerai timepieces, the Tuttonero Luminor 1950 3 days GMT automatic, in ceramic. The black on black colouring is extremely dramatic – even the moment is black. This incredibly tough finish is five times stronger than steel and certainly a timepiece that has the Paneristi excited!

SERAI LOBELO AND HIS LOAFERS
I’ve always had a soft spot for a man in loafers and no socks. Serai Lobelo of Lobelo Creative Lab is the subject of a style diary created by Green Cross shoes – and it’s enough to make you fall in love with shoes all over again. The art of polishing your shoes, the ritual right down to how you tie your laces – they’re all thoughts and emotions that we tend to forget in the daily rush to get dressed and get on with things. I love Lobelo’s considered style and his loafers but, most of all, I like his soul.

JIMMY CHOO
While we’re on shoes, the new Jimmy Choo Pre-Fall 2018 campaign features some heels worthy of some attention. These images of models Anja Rubik and Clement Chabernaud in New York are simply stunning but it’s those snake-skin numbers with a sexy tie at the angle that I’m dreaming about. We’ve all got our favourite go-to heel designer – Jimmy Choo is certainly one of mine!

NDABUKO NTULI’S FIRST SOLO SHOW
Using found objects to create art is nothing new but Ndabuko Ntuli has taken it to another level with his unique talent for creating pixel-like images with found squares of colour. This time he’s gone really graphic on us and I can’t wait to see the new collection, dedicated to his late grandfather who encouraged him to take up visual art.
Masobeshe Ntuli was a sculptor and this may explain some of Ndabuko’s amazing understanding of three-dimensional form.
A practicing sangoma and talented musician, the artist’s first solo is strongly influenced by his Zulu roots and I can’t wait for an opening evening of art and Maskandi that he has composed in celebration of the event. themelrosegallery.com
AN ABANDONED SAINT AND OTHER FORGOTTEN STORIES BY JILL JOUBERT
Jill Joubert is a founding member of the Handspring Puppet Company and her whimsical sculptures on show at Smith Gallery in Cape Town are testament to this background in the performing arts.
Sculpted using found pieces of yellowwood, jacaranda, beech and rosewood, the dead wood is “reborn” in the form of a strangely haunting collection of fantastic and fantastical human/animal/gender hybrids.
There’s something quite haunting about these semi-religious figurines that I just can’t get out of my mind.
