40 under 40, a young artist showcase in the fairest Cape
Indulge in a pan-African feel of multidisciplinary artists at Twee Jonge Gezellen
Embroidering what has become the de facto Art Month of September in SA is a new artist showcase in the historic grounds of the venerable Twee Jonge Gezellen wine estate in Tulbagh near Cape Town. The 40 under 40 exhibition brings together 60 works by 40 artists, all under the age of 40, across seven indoor and outdoor sites on the estate, from September 25 to February 28, 2022.
The estate is home to well-known local MCC brand Krone, who have established a collaboration with edgy contemporary Cape Town gallery WHATIFTHEWORLD. The two organisations have run a collaborative gallery on the estate since 2018, which forms one of the sites for what promises to be an intriguing platform for emerging and more established young artists.
Since the core gallery and the 40 under 40 initiative is on a luxurious and beautiful wine estate, it makes sense for the organisers to turn it into an immersive experience, naturally involving drinking wine! Guests will navigate the exhibition via directional wayfinding and a map connecting the various sites. The seven locations are spread across the estate and the route is ordered from start to finish. The exhibition begins at the KRONE X WHATIFTHEWORLD gallery premises and leads out onto the gardens and lawns before winding its way to the cellar annex and arcade before finishing at the reception area, with the nearby Krone Cap Classique tasting room — set against a majestic mountain and vineyard backdrop — forming a beautiful focal point. There will also be guided walkabouts and artists’ activations throughout the six months of the show.
