Ed's letter | Meaning and value...

Few people speak fashion better than Vogue. A recent post on the fashion bible’s website proclaimed: “If the Christmas party season were an item of clothing, it would be Prada’s golden brocade coat.

There is, categorically, no better evening coat.” I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a pretty grand piece (take a look on page 28 — it’s a beauty!) and one of those fashion
treasures that will live on in classic splendour for many years to come.

Always one to set the trend and drive the fashion conversation, Prada’s timeless-but-still-out-there approach resonates with me more than ever right now, and the magic of the gold brocade coat is a reminder of how important it is to invest in the right pieces when they come along.

It’s also that time of the year when we’re all thinking ahead and planning some changes. (I daren’t breathe the words New Year’s Resolution — my record’s hopeless.) And if there’s one adjustment I intend to make in 2017, it is to
focus on the terms “meaning” and “value”, and to make them the most important ingredients in my life and home.

Whether we’re talking friends, fashion, or finances, we know it’s really only worth investing in those that add value and are designed to last. It’s so simple, yet we break the rules every day. At least I do.

No more: from shoes to specs, gifts to gadgets — I now have space in my life for only those items that add value in terms of design, beauty, meaning, and longevity.

Call it end-of-year nostalgia, but I’m tired of discarding possessions that no longer work or look the part. It’s time for more considered choices and an uncompromising commitment to brilliance and timelessness. I’ll be happy to
report back on my year of living “valuably”, this time next year. Hopefully, I’ll be wearing that gold coat.

Happy holidays!
Jacquie
