Monochrome Paintings by Zander Blom Stevenson Gallery Johannesburg

For Zander Blom’s new exhibition with Stevenson Gallery, he has stripped down his colour palette and embraced abstraction. For the works exhibited in Monochrome Paintings, the artist used diluted oil paint which he applied with thin brush strokes to primed lined and then worked into the cloth, revealing the surface of the canvas.

To create this body of work, the artist says he created visual tricks employed in smart ways.

“It’s not just peaceful in the studio, it’s also exciting because these works are fun to make,” says the artist. “The simplicity of it is a joyous relief.

Monochrome Paintings opens on February 12 and will run until March 18. The gallery is open from 9am — 5pm Mondays to Fridays and from 10am — 1pm on Saturdays.

Shooting Down Babylon by Tracey Rose Zeitz MOCAA

Shooting Down Babylon is the largest, and most comprehensive, retrospective from South African artist Tracey Rose.

Originally planned for 2020 but postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the exhibition traces some of the artist’s work from 1996 to 2019.

Her work acts as an investigation into postapartheid legacies and liberation movements and how the body is often a site for outrage and protest, touching on her earlier interest in identifying tropes, to her interest in the aesthetics of violence, and more recent interest in rituals and processes of healing.

Shooting Down Babylon opens on February 18 and will run until August 28. The museum is open from 10am — 6pm Tuesdays to Sundays.
