What inspired you to launch Westman Atelier?

I wanted to create a clean yet luxurious performance brand. There have always been clean brands, and luxury beauty brands, but a combination of the two was still missing. Performance is paramount to me as a makeup artist, and I knew that whatever I created had to outperform the most luxury of brands to earn its space in my makeup bag! Not only did I want to inspire the consumer to choose a cleaner alternative but I also really wanted to set the standard within the beauty industry, to challenge and welcome other brands to join the clean movement, especially within the luxury space. It’s great to see this approach to clean beauty being adopted by other brands as well, both established and new.

What are some of the challenges in formulating clean, effective, and luxurious products?

One of the main challenges was sourcing active clean ingredients. I never want to make a product that just adds colour to the skin. I want it to soothe, nourish, and repair the skin. When we started, it was so difficult. Our labs would constantly tell me “No, not possible,” but I would push — I’m relentless! We’re incredibly fortunate to work with a green chemist who advises us on ingredients as well. Years later it’s still difficult, but there are so many innovations out there. Consumers deserve and want more from their products and I believe the industry is really listening and learning from it.
