Essential beauty products? They include QMS Medicosmetics for my face (their Deep Gentle Cleanser, Hydrating Boost Tonic Mist, and ACE Vitamin Day & Night Cream), Heliocare Advanced Gel SPF 50, and Marvis Classic Toothpaste — I love the Liquorice Mint. I also alternate my moisturiser with Nuxe Aquabella Beauty-Revealing Moisturising Emulsion for a smoother finish and touch.

Adored scents? My current favourites are Le Labo Santal 33, Penhaligon’s Blenheim Bouquet, Chanel Mademoiselle, Dior Oud Ispahan, and M Micallef’s Delice.

Three words to describe your style? Classic, daring, and simple.

Buildings everyone should visit? Locally, Ponte City in Berea. It really remains one of the landmarks of our beautiful Joburg. Internationally, New York’s Chrysler Building, the Imperial Palace in Kyoto, Japan, and St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City.

Tea or coffee? I wake up with a good cup of coffee and a glass of water.

How do you relax? Through reading and travel. Given the time we’ve had in the past year I haven’t done much of the latter, so reading has been my real escape. Oh, and redecorating my home has offered respite too.

Dream purchase if money was no object? Property in Monaco or on the French Riviera.

Reading? The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek.

Listening to? I’m enjoying Sabrina Claudio’s music but equally find myself reminiscing with the music I grew up listening to: Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Sibongile Khumalo, Jonas Gwangwa, Letta Mbulu, Caiphus Semenya, Aretha Franklin, George Michael, Michael Jackson, and Diana Ross.

Art you’re enjoying? I have my eye on the work of Phila Hillie and on one of Marco Olivier’s sculptures, if I can find space for it…

Sunday mornings are for? Drinking coffee in bed and then catching up with my mom after mass.

Which local soccer team do you support? (I’m covering my face and laughing at this question.) I support all 16 football teams in the Premier Soccer League and all 16 in the National First Division.

Style icon? South African-born interior designer Kelly Hoppen is my design icon but my style icon is my late aunt, who sadly passed away in January 2020.

What makes you happiest? Family.

Last place you visited that knocked your socks off? Japan. Their culture, cleanliness, discipline, and food are just amazing. I love Japanese gardens and minimalist design. Everything from bullet trains to toilets works efficiently. It’s also the one country where my surname is pronounced properly just by reading it and I don’t have to teach them how to spell it before they can say it.

When travel resumes as normal, where are you going? Ecstatic that the Covid-19 crisis is over — or at least the vaccine can prevent the spread — I would book to go to the south of France, Monaco, Rome, and the Amalfi Coast!

Dream dinner-party guests? I’d have a table for 12 that includes Princess Diana, Pope Francis, Cicely Tyson, Oprah, Al Pacino, Serena Williams, Nina Simone, Grace Kelly, Chadwick Boseman, Steve Biko, and Robert Sobukwe.

Must-have items? Cire Trudon, Dr Vranjes, and Fornasetti scented candles. Working from home demands that we enjoy the luxury of scent throughout the day.

And a lust-have? A Pomellato Nudo collection ring with black diamonds. It looked so beautiful on my hand when I tried it on, plus black diamonds are rare, elegant, and understated.

Fridge essentials? Cheese, chilli, and water.

Great gift you recently received? My son gave me the Dior Catwalk: Complete Collections coffee-table book for Christmas 2020.

What inspires you? Progress, success and resilience — especially among young men and women. Equally, being charitable by equipping the less fortunate to sustain themselves towards less dependence on handouts.
