2. LA MOTTE MUSEUM, FRANSCHHOEK

Alongside rotating exhibitions, the highlight of this quiet gallery is the 45 artworks by acclaimed landscape artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, acquired from his daughter Marita Pierneef-Bailey in 2009. The permanent collection is accompanied by a handful of Pierneef’s personal effects, from documents and books to his painting equipment. Entrance is free.

3. EVERARD READ EXPANDS

Late 2019 will see Everard Read curating an exciting new arts destination in the Franschhoek valley. Situated alongside the current Leeu Estates property, the voluminous new gallery and its adjoining restaurant will offer indoor and outdoor exhibitions, with a range of sites specially designed for exhibiting monumental sculpture.

“There would be no point in just opening another gallery,” says Charles Shields, director and co-owner of Everard Read Gallery in Cape Town. “This will be a space where we can play around with the large-scale works we have come to specialise in.”

Beyond the restaurant, gallery, and gardens there are plans to create a residency programme and workshop for visiting artists.
