INSIDE LOOK | Live la dolce vita in Dolce & Gabbana’s fabulous island refuge

The lavish property is on the island of Stromboli, in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the north coast of Sicily, where Domenico Dolce was born. With stunning sea views from every one of its seven bedrooms, the home also has one of Italy’s most active volcanoes as a backdrop. 

The villa comprises three buildings, surrounded by terraces, gardens and sea vistas.

Dolce and Stefano Gabbana bought the island in the ’90s, when they were still romantically involved, and used it as a spot to entertain their celebrity friends. The couple split in 2005 but remain friends. According to the listing with Lionel Luxury Real Estate, they have renovated the villa with "the same love and passion they put into designing their clothes".

As a fashion house, Dolce & Gabbana is renowned for its clashing colours and prints and that aesthetic is very much in evidence in the villa. 

In addition to its seven bedrooms, it boasts nine bathrooms and features one-off pieces of furniture, handpainted Majolica tiles and D&G fabrics patterned with fruit and flowers.

The holiday home is also filled with the brand's favourite materials, including crocheted lace curtains, wool, and silk bedding.

According to the agents, the exterior is typical of properties in the area but the inside reveals its owners’ unmistakable style, with magnificent furnishings, refined objects produced by local artisans, brightly coloured bedrooms and kaleidoscopic tiles adorning the walls and floors.   

The bathrooms, too, are all in a different style and feature lava-stone cladding. 

With a population of 500, the remote island can be reached by boat or via helicopter, thanks to the heliport a few minutes from the property. 

The Stromboli volcano is constantly active, with minor eruptions, visible from many points on the island and from the surrounding sea, giving rise to the island's nickname "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean".
