In 2021 mobile gaming generated $93.2bn annual revenue making it the largest gaming segment worldwide. Bearing that in mind, it should come as no surprise that Asus, the Taiwanese tech company best known for its laptops and Republic of Gamers (ROG) gaming line, has recently unveiled its new ROG Phone 6 series of gaming smartphones.

Comprising two models, the ROG Phone 6 and the ROG Phone 6 Pro, which Asus calls “the most powerful ROG phones ever made”, it is the non-pro variant that will be available in SA later in 2022.

Powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 system-on-chip (SOC), the ROG Phone 6 is said to deliver a more than 50% improved performance boost compared with the ROG Phone 5. This is paired with an upgraded GameCool 6 cooling system, a huge 6000 mAh battery and up to 18GB RAM and 512GB storage, making this gaming phone one of the most powerful devices of 2022.

While it may be incredibly powerful, no gaming phone would be worth anything without an impressive display. Visuals on the ROG Phone 6 are delivered by the 6.78-inch Samsung-made Amoled HDR10+ display, which Asus has tuned to deliver a 165Hz refresh rate. It also boasts an industry-leading 720Hz touch-sampling rate and a 23ms ultra-low touch latency.

The display can be set to 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz, or 165Hz and has been tuned in collaboration with leading visual-processing company Pixelworks for colour accuracy.

For even more advanced control possibilities, the AirTrigger 6 has been significantly upgraded. The ultrasonic sensors fully support various gestures, including new features such as dual action, press and lift, and gyroscope aiming.

Other standout features include a GameFX audio system, 3.5mm headphone jack, sound optimised by Swedish digital audio company Dirac who has also worked with OPPO, Bentley, BMW and Klipsch.

The ROG Phone 6 series is equipped with a triple-camera system and includes a 12MP front camera perfect for high-quality group selfies and live-streaming videos.

The ROG Phone 6 is available in Phantom Black and Storm White and comes equipped with Aura RGB lighting on the back, up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and up to 512GB of storage.
