Gauteng’s first major rains have come and gone which means that it’s officially the start of summer (read: silly season) and thus time to herald Joburg’s favourite rooftop event: Sanlam Handmade Contemporary – or HmC if you’re in the know. With so much to choose from at Joburg’s premiere event dedicated to all things delicious and stylish it can get a little daunting, so we did all the research for you.

HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT:

FOOD:

Each year HmC is a platform to celebrate the culinary in their Chef’s in the City series and this year is no exception as chefs from three of Joburg’s top spots take to the stand for a day to create their signature dishes for curious audiences. Get in there quick if you want a chance to dine on the excellence from inner city tapas chef extraordinaire, Urbanologi’s Jack Coetzee; hip Bryanston elite, Gemelli’s Chef Paolo Santo and Alessandro Mosupi Khojane; and the harvested delights by Chef Daniela Gutstadt from Lanseria’s Culinary Table.

King Arabic Sandwich This Mayfair bakery staple is the where you get the best pies in town, bar none. Believe us when we tell you that their curried beef pie is a must try. Vegetarians will also find delicious solace in their tasty pick and eat plate selections.

OnoWe recently featured them in a story about the growing poké bowl craze. If you haven’t made your way to Illovo just yet, now is your chance to get fresh with jewelled bowls of raw fish and veg (and, yes, they have a vegan option too).

Richard BosmanThere’s a reason we flock to this man’s stand at every opportunity we get: His plates of sliced meaty treats pair perfectly with any of your preferred vineyard’s finest. Make sure you pick up a jar of his rillettes. Just trust us.

Macaroon ice-cream sandwiches. Need we say more?

Che Argentine
Seek out this smoking South American staple if you are looking for meat so tender it melts in your mouth. More importantly, make a beeline for their chimichuri and put it on practically everything.

DRINKS:

Who doesn’t like change? Especially when a mix of science and alchemy comes into play and changes the colour of your drink before your very eyes! We predict that the talk of the town, or the fair in this case, will most certainly be Time Anchor Distillery’s new Mirari Blue Gin that get’s it’s striking blue colour from the butterfly pea flower. But the magic happens when mixed with either tonic or lemon juice changing the ph levels and transforming your drink into pink. Some may be familiar with this trick from the Cape’s Six Dogs Gin but for those who aren’t gin hipsters, be prepared to have your minds blown this weekend.

Other places to check out:

JorgensonsWe know we just sang the praises of another gin brand but don’t miss out on this Wellington icon. Every year they bring a new flavour to the table: Last year it was pepper, and “moonshine”; the year before that, saffron – we can’t wait to see what they have in store this year.

Fehmz MocktailsIf you’re braving a “Sober October” or have an under 18 year old ward then why not liven things up a little and give canned stuff a skip. We instead recommend indulging in a colourful – yet safe – Strawberry Spritzer or Cherry Fizz.

Lynx WineDon’t be thrown by their curious sports car like logo, Lynx makes a particularly light and fruity delicious viognier wine that will be positively wonderful in the warm afternoon rooftop sun. Get a bottle while you’re at it.

Graham BeckWorld class sparkling wine on a warm summer day. It’s everything.

Idiom Wines
Idiom will be showing off their recently awarded South African “Cape Blend” that walked off with the prestigious ABSA Perold Top 5 Cape Blends award for the third time in as many years. Reward this achievement with the purchase of a glass or two.

Sanlam Handmade Contemporary takes place at the Hyde Park Shopping Centre Rooftop from today, all weekend. You can buy tickets at webtickets.co.za or at the door. Be sure to grab a taxi there, as parking is practically nonexistent and drinking gin is only fun when done responsibly.
