Visitors to Johannesburg's bohemian enclave of Melville will have noticed a few cool additions to the scene in the past year or so. The top half of 7th Street, the main thoroughfare and the heart of the action on weekend nights, is bustling with recently opened bistros, bars, and breakfast spots.

Hiding in an alleyway behind what is rumoured to soon be a boutique hotel, you’ll find an undiscovered gem quickly making its way onto the hot list of Friday-night hangout spots for the cool kids. Glory is a side street Afro-Asian fusion eatery straight out of the East, the combined brainchild of Kevin Naidoo, Nick Scott, Caroline Olavarrieta, and Dillon Harland.

Red fluorescent lighting, a mishmash of ’70s-style garden furniture and graphic prints, sets a laid-back scene where you can imbibe freshly made cocktails (try the Asian margarita and the basil, lime, and coconut daiquiri) and munch on spicy oriental chicken and dumplings. Keep an eye on its Facebook page for upcoming DJ appearances and arrive early, as space is tight and it’s always packed. Open from noon till night caps. Glory.
