The Chinese new year officially began on January 25 – and the Year of the Metal Rat promises to bring strength, intelligence and insight. Luxury fashion brands have created limited-edition collections to celebrate it.

LUCKY IN RED

Burberry celebrates the Year of the Rat with a scarlet capsule collection. Athleisure separates, as well as the house’s iconic pieces, are given a vibrant coat of red, which for the Chinese symbolises joy, vitality and prosperity. It has also created a limited-edition Thomas Burberry monogram with an original illustration to honour the year.

MICKEY WEARS GUCCI

Gucci welcomes the prosperity and happiness of the lunar new year with a playful collection featuring Disney’s Minnie and Mickey Mouse. The cartoon characters appear throughout the house’s ready-to-wear garments and accessories from the Cruise 2020 collection in colourful prints, embroidered patches and motifs.

COUNTING THE HOURS

Chopard looks to the ancient Japanese art of Urushi lacquerware for their L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Rat timepiece. This limited-edition watch is crafted in 18-carat rose gold and is powered by an ultra-thin movement.

A HOUSE RAT

Louis Vuitton’s homage to the Chinese new year is a rat-inspired bag charm that doubles as a key holder. The rat-shaped charm, that references the Louis Vuitton trunks, has a cowhide leather finish and the brand’s name engraved on the snap hook and ring.
