Those passing the new Taibo Bacar store in Hyde Park’s hallowed passages have been suffering from whiplash due to the fashion outlet’s expertly conceived interior aesthetic. It is sophisticated and feminine, with a distinct tropical spirit that nods to the fashion designer’s homeland of Mozambique. This is especially refreshing in a consumer culture that is lead by European trends.

Bacar’s choice of Joburg designer Donald Nxumalo turned out to be an ace move, with the rising young interiorsmith nailing the brief. The result is a store that any lifestyle-conscious, well-travelled and fashion-forward woman would be honoured to experience.

“Taibo wanted the store to reflect his position as a man creating high-end fashion for women,” explains Nxumalo.

The store’s main colour combo - midnight blue and dusky pink - is a reference to this duality, while subtle nods to island life have been given a contemporary, refined outlet. A Xavier Clarisse delicious monster pendant further taps into the tropical undercurrent in the interior, while a series of large arches, reminiscent of Mozambican architecture, with draped recesses offer a beautiful stage for Bacar’s sought-after garments and accessories to be shown off.

“By incorporating the designer’s personal memories with a strong brand identity, we created a very unique concept,” Nxumalo reflects.

Slatted timber panelling in dusky pink has been used to bring textural interest and brass details elegantly elevate the interior.

“Another play on nostalgia was incorporated by way of the store’s terrazzo floor tiles which are a throwback to Taibo’s childhood memories playing on his mother’s kitchen floor,” he explains.

A proliferation of lush and leafy foliage makes clients feel they’re far from a Joburg shopping centre experience and bespoke wallpaper ties it all together, incorporating the brand’s logo and the store’s signature colours.
