If you haven’t heard of Eleanor Lakelin, you’re in for a treat. She’s a British woodworker with a devotion to celebrating the unique, natural properties inherent in each piece of wood she works with. Her Amphora 1/19 is occupying the number one spot on our design radar.

Recently shown at PAD London with Sarah Myerscough Gallery, it’s one of 19 wooden vessels in her Echoes of Amphora series, taking its cue from the ancient Greek vessels, but boldly departing from the original form with an earthy, gnarled expression.

Elegantly refined on the one side, the vessel, made from horse chestnut burr, has an entirely different nature on the other side, with knotted and raised surface details that are full of life, thanks to the sandblasted, burled texture. It has a dual expression in that it’s organic and elemental, as well as polished and sophisticated.
