GOING UP

1. SÉMILLON

South Africa’s avant-garde winemakers are turning their attentions to sémillon (sorry chenin, it’s been real) and so are we. To discover why, sample a few options: Boekenhoutskloof, Ghost Corner, Swerwer, and Damascene.

2. SCHLUMPFY COUCHES

It’s time to replace that sleek mid-century modern piece with a big, schlumpfy modular couch (ideally in one or more bold colours) that can be reconfigured on the regular.

3. THE SIGNATURE SCENT

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: once you’ve found a signature scent, why would you stray from it with way-less-interesting flanker fragrances (the ones they release at Christmas)? Stay focused and committed, people!

4. THE TOTE

There’s nothing cooler than a tote bag that shows off your travel nous — and, let’s face it, you also need something in which to carry the stuff alongside your fashionably tiny handbag. Our faves include the London Review of Books option (available at the London Review Bookshop) or a Zabar’s tote (with bright orange lettering) from the eponymous deli in New York City.

GOING DOWN

1. NOT-SO-FINGER-LICKING GOOD, KFC

In spite of one of its restaurants becoming the chicest new spot for engagements recently, KFC’s actual chicken is way, way less good than the delicious new versions of spicy Korean fried chicken popping up on stylish menus now.

2. GOODBYE GREY

It’s been a long time coming, but subtle shades of grey are now definitely an interiors trend of the past. Instead, choose beautiful browns — take your cue from the gorgeous shades used in designer Tiaan Nagel’s new store in Hyde Park Corner.

3. K-BEAUTY BYE

Why use an expensive serum when a bunch of “Korean beauty” sheet masks will do the same tasks at a fraction of the price?

4. UNFRIEND FACEBOOK

We don’t know anyone who’s still bothering with Facebook, so pick your new social-media poison according to your needs. Spend hours curating an enviable Instagram feed, or disappear into the argumentative arena that is Twitter — just don’t try doing both, or you’ll never lift your head from your phone again.

5. FAST FASHION

While H&M scores points for recycling your old clothes, fast fashion’s days are numbered. Instead, it’s time to invest in less: choose stylish, well-made staples and aim to wear them regularly for years.
