The décor
Courtesy of ATTIK design, the interior is all about texture — the heritage brickwork, rose gold finishes and velvety seating offset by sleek herringbone tiles and subdued charcoal and emerald tones. It’s luxe without feeling fussy.
The menu
The food is all about simple flavours; the portions modest and restrained, allowing you to work your way through starters, mains and dessert without feeling like a glut. While the menu is seasonal and changes according to the availability of fresh produce, you are guaranteed a concise but pleasing range that will satisfy meat lovers and veggies alike.
Birds of a different feather
Luxuriating at Mink & Trout
There’s something deliciously satisfying about a good makeover, and what better example than the newly opened Mink & Trout on Bree Street, Cape Town. Named for chefs and co-owners, Kevin Mink and Leigh Trout, the space that once played home to Birds Cafe has been reimagined as a moody and sophisticated wine bar and bistro.

Lunch options include an impressive array of salads, while those dining in the evening can look forward to perfectly seared fish, steak and deconstructed gnocchi — not to mention their legendary Karoo Lamb Bredie — all cooked in the open-view kitchen. Sides are worth ordering, the triple-fried chips with aioli mayo a favourite and decidedly necessary for the hungry. Desserts are a fixed feature and for good reason. The crème brûlée, while too tiny to share, is everything the classic should be, the sugar layer crispy and light, complemented by berries and meringue. The flourless chocolate torte is equally moreish, layered on a base of white chocolate and served with crème fraiche.

The drinks
Sup from a curated selection of SA’s finest wines and bubbles, with the usual suspects as well as some refreshingly novel features on the menu — most of which are available in carafe portions. There is also a gleaming bar at the entrance, so if you’re after a pre-or post-dinner beer, cocktail or aperitif, they’ve got you covered.
The service
The service is professional, attentive and warm; the staff knowledgeable and sure about their dishes and recommendations.
