Sitting among the striking interiors of Salsa Mexican Grill in the Bedford Centre, Joburg is an experience in itself. The design is courtesy of interior and architecture experts Reddeco, whose previous work includes Koi and Mythos in Pretoria.

Now the team has cast its design spell on Salsa. The restaurant, a sister space to its Parkhurst and Pineslopes branches, boasts a vast and considered space. “The design concept of this interior was fuelled and developed around the idea of doing away with specifically themed restaurant interiors,” says Gys van Graan of Reddeco. The general palette is largely neutral, and texture has been added using terrazzo tiles, timber, clay, concrete, and plaster.

However, the backdrop to the large bar references brightly coloured and boldly patterned Mexican art with a display of Dia de los Muertos Skulls. The Loom bench is also a focal point, and its upholstery is an ode to Western tapestry design. The design extension of its expansive backrest creates the illusion
that the patterned fabric is still being woven, and forms a screen, too. The space is exquisite and the food’s not bad either. Chef Raynor Damons recommends the jalapeño craft-brewed tequila and pulled pork taco for the
ultimate pairing. salsamexicangrill.co.za
