These are exacting decisions, revealing themselves fully only years or decades into the future.
Under Barrie’s stewardship, Benriach’s portfolio has become a study in intent. Each expression is layered, composed, and balanced. Precision becomes the source of authority: the ability to guide flavour confidently while allowing time to play its essential role.
This approach is evident in three expressions available to South African whisky drinkers. Benriach The Twelve showcases the distillery’s fruit-forward elegance, matured in sherry, bourbon and port casks for depth without heaviness. The Smoky Twelve introduces Benriach’s distinctive Speyside peat, sweeter and more nuanced, layered with fruit and oak rather than overpowering smoke.
Smoke Season captures the distillery’s seasonal peated production, offering a bolder yet still controlled exploration of smoke and sweetness. In the glass, this precision translates into layered sensory detail of orchard fruit, honeyed malt, toasted oak, soft spice and measured smoke, flavours that unfold gradually rather than declare themselves all at once.
It is whisky designed to be discovered, not rushed, rewarding attention with complexity.
This notion of precision as power extends beyond the liquid itself. One of only a handful of female master blenders in the world, Barrie represents a modern model of leadership, grounded in deep expertise and influence. Her role is essential to the craft at Benriach, with the whiskies themselves serving as the ultimate evidence of her skill.
