“Easy-drinking” often gets a bad rap, it usually refers to wines that are described as “cheap and cheerful”, however, I beg to differ. These three wines are easy-drinking in the best of senses as they not only offer phenomenal value but are also delicious. No need to store them away for a few years – though you certainly can – and age before drinking. As winter sets in these are the bottles I’ll be cracking open fireside.

Brookdale Mason Road chenin blanc 2021

The third vintage from the breathtaking Paarl estate and dynamic young winemaker Kiara Scott offers an unbelievably fresh and textured wine.

On the nose honeysuckle, sweet pear and petrichor mineral notes lead to a palate bursting with crisp apple, freshly cut peaches, lime and honeycomb. Wonderful texture and a balancing zippy acidity. A lifestyle range done so well!

Thorne & Daughters Copper Pot 2021

John Seccombe’s Copper Pot pinot noir has to be one of the best value-for-money bottles on the market, the wine punching way above its price point. Made from grapes sourced from around the Overberg, the pinot noir is made with the winemaker’s simple, gentle and honest approach to winemaking and it delivers a wine in kind.

Perfumed, the nose opens with red and purple berries, sweet florals, boiled sweets and a touch of fynbos. The palate following with generous dark red fruits, red currant and a long savoury finish. Fine tannins and a superb acidity give the wine superb structure.

Glenelly The Glass Collection cabernet sauvignon 2019

Those looking for a more full bodied red need look no further than Glenelly’s Glass Collection cabernet sauvignon 2019. The famed Stellenbosch winery created the Glass Collection as a range of wines to be best enjoyed among friends, while still retaining its focus on beautiful and serious winemaking.

The 2019 is a classic expression of Stellenbosch Cab. The wine opens with blackcurrant, cherry and baking spice aromas. The palate with its ripe black and red fruits, cassis, cedar wood and a touch of mint has firm tannins, a beautiful fresh acidity and long lingering finish. It’s the perfect wine for fireside sipping this winter.
