Expos in their previous incarnations being a thing of the past opens the way for new, engaging ways to encounter design. The Joburg Design Collective, in association with Design Joburg and Sanlam Private Wealth offered would-be expo goers an interactive way to engage with design in the Kramerville Design District over the first weekend of June. The dynamic three-day event threw into sharp focus the sheer scope of skill and design in SA, and offered a launchpad for some exciting new pieces. There’ll be another edition in the summer. But in the meantime, here are a few standout spaces and products from the pop-up.

Comfort zone | Studio 19

Ever the advocate for textural spaces, Studio 19’s team are experts at layering and debuted a freshly rejigged showroom to welcome visitors into over the weekend – with the mini renovation adding a convivial seating area and shelving display. The new-look space also showed off some new additions in situ - including their Teddy chair and the Maverick table, both statement pieces worthy of centre stage in a room.

Candy land | Tonic Design

Tonic Design, despite being ‘veterans’ within the industry manage to continuously reinvent, surprise and delight. Their bright, punchy space set the scene for the launch of the new Cannes and Cigarette collections. The Cigarette side table – in cachous and candyapple - is a high gloss dose of pure fun, while the Cannes collection (a five-part family of deco-inspired pieces in rich colours) will add sophistication.

We love a cross-discipline sidestep and Neimil, known best for its statement cushions showcased the breadth of its textile scope with some new must-have artworks using their signature punch needling technique. Also along textile lines, and an arguable best in class when it comes to its international fabric collections, St Leger & Viney’s displays for the event made a strong case for fabric statement walls with a new installation of one of Elitis’ Panoramiques (a magnificent 3x3m expanse).

A collab made in colour heaven, the space by décor duo Anatomy Design with a feature wall by Simply Colour (founded by Meg Shave) was a masterclass in tonal harmony and intriguing form, with striking artwork and textural accessories striking just the right note of welcoming and sophisticated.
