The Macallan has done it again, and just in time for winter, too. Following on the release of its Double Cask 12 Year Old in 2016, the new The Macallan Double Cask 15 and 18 Year Old are the perfect fusions of American and European sherry-seasoned oak casks.

The story of The Macallan Double Cask 15 and 18 Year Old spans the verdant forests of the new and old worlds. Oak from the hillsides of Spain and the slopes of the Pyrenees is sourced along with newer oak from Ohio and Kentucky to craft sherry casks that are aged and seasoned to perfection. These casks are then sent to The Macallan’s distillery in Speyside, Scotland, where they are used to house The Macallan’s new-make spirit and then left to rest.

The Macallan Whisky Mastery team uses a delicate combination from both casks to craft The Macallan Double Cask 15 and 18 Year Old which, thanks to the unique cask crafting and seasoning process, results in a whisky flavour profile that combines the classic spice of The Macallan from the European casks with subtle hints of vanilla from the American casks.

The Macallan Whisky Mastery team is passionate about this new range and the value that oak contributes to the flavour, colour, and aroma profiles. The Double Cask 15 Year Old exhibits characteristics of honey, citrus, and chocolate from the American casks, while the traditional European casks balance this with the richness of fruits, sherry, and wood spice. The Macallan Double Cask 18 Year Old offers slightly more complexity, with rich raisin and sultana that is subtly balanced by warming oak spice.

The Macallan Double Cask range is truly the best of two worlds.
