In the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, people have been advised to stay at home and practise social distancing. Eat “out” responsibly, and support local business while you’re at it, by ordering from one of these Joburg eateries which are providing Covid-19-concious home-dining options.

1. DW ELEVEN-13

If you’ve ever dreamt of enjoying fine dining at your own table, here’s your chance. Chef-proprietor Marthinus Ferreira has announced his restaurant dw eleven-13, will be offering a fine-dining-at-home, call-and-collect service. The meals serve four and allow for the choice of roast chicken or a lamb shoulder both of which are accompanied by potatoes, confit beets, carrots and gravy.

2. THE LEOPARD

Andrea Burgener’s 44 Stanley eatery has an online store called The Leopard + which delivers an array of exciting readymade dishes from her restaurant to your home. Ready to heat and eat meals can be ordered from starters, mains and dessert menus or custom built from a selection of soups, salads, veg, meats and sweet dishes. Expect the likes of melanzane with homemade Jersey-milk ricotta, comforting chicken pie with a mini green-leaf salad and The Leopard’s famous brownies for dessert. Order online.

3. THE LOCAL GRILL

The Local Grill had to make the tough decision to temporarily close their doors. However, owner Steve Maresch, determined to not leave his loyal customer base wanting, decided to introduce a butcher offering. Those who want to cook at home can pick up the restaurant’s exceptional aged beef, cut to order and ready to collect.

4. IL CONTADINO

Chef-patron James Diack has announced that his restaurant Il Contadino will stay open during the current crisis, promising to follow the strictest cleanliness regime at all times. The eatery is now offering a ‘Curbside Call-and-Collect’ for those not wishing to venture into restaurants, allowing customers to order their favourite farm-fresh dishes and collect from the comfort of their own cars. Go for the legendary wild boar ragu or their delcious thin-based wood fired pizzas.

5. OLIVES & PLATES

The popular cafe group has launched “Olives in your kitchen”, a range of family meals (available in servings of two or six) available for pick up from their West Street store in Sandton with an Uber Eats and Mr D service to be available in days to come. The menu features a selection of hearty meals the likes of slow-cooked beef casseroles, butter chicken and traditional Greek moussaka, in addition to the sides, salads, soups and desserts required for a full meal.

6. SIN + TAX BAR

The crew at Sin + Tax have developed a range of premium bottled cocktails that require little more than a pour, stir and garnish to complete, allowing you to enjoy the popular watering hole’s creations in your home. The tipples are available to pick up from the bar or can be delivered if you’re in the Parks area. Because they’re the cool kids in town you’ll have to slide into their DMs to order.

7. RED CHAMBER

Emma Chen’s Red Chamber has been the go-to for Chinese fair in Joburg for over 30 years. In a heart-felt email speaking to the crisis and how it’s effected her as a woman who falls into the high risk category (Chen is over 60 years old and is asthmatic and diabetic), and as a restaurateur with a restaurant to run. “I am a resilient Chinese South African! Life must carry on,” she says.

In order to adapt to the times, Chen has introduced a “Swipe and Run” option. Diners can choose off the A la carte menu or opt for one of the new family meal options (servings available for 2, 3 and 4 pax) and pick it up drive through-style at Hyde Park Corner Shopping Centre’s Woolworths entrance where designated parking bays have been allocated. Think tiger salad or spicy cucumber salad, beef potstickers, five spice chicken wings, crispy beef with chilli and garlic, and plenty more.
