Fireside Bistro truly lives up to its name. The restaurant, which is a couple of months old and is in Johannesburg’s Norwood suburb, cooks its food on flames. The no-frills eatery has a traditional bistro-type mix of meals that includes steaks, seafood and game. Most dishes are prepared on an open grill with a special wood that gives the food a “distinct smoked flavour”, says chef and owner Terence Klaff, whose résumé includes La Rustica restaurant and the Grill House in Rosebank. I tucked into what I can honestly say was one of the best prepared and tastiest springboks steak I’ve ever had.

It was tender and prepared exactly the way I wanted it. The best was the wood-smoky taste, which does not overpower the distinct taste of the springbok. Accompanying my venison was a crisp blue-cheese salad. Another mouth-watering dish was the seared salmon, which just melts in your mouth. The
dessert menu will not disappoint: the selection includes malva pudding, choc brownie pudding and other delights perfect for winter.
