THE DEVOTION BAG FROM DOLCE ET GABBANA

An iconic bag from the kings of extravagant Italian design is always a moment. And when the team from Dolce et Gabbana sent what they have christened the Devotion Bag down the catwalk – by drone! – at the autumn winter 18/19 shows, everyone knew it was a moment to remember.

The focal point of the Devotion bag is of course the golden sacred heart, embellished with pearls and foliage as only D&G can embellish, using all the same techniques of fine jewellery manufacturing.

With every exquisite detail handmade and finished, and with a luxurious quilted finish and gleaming chain strap, the Devotion is right up there with that other famous quilted classic flap bag as a timeless accessory we’re all going to covet.

KARE, MISSIBABA LIVING AND MOON BASKET

I was lucky enough to stumble upon the Travelling Circus pop up at 44 Stanley last week and discovered two lovely new décor names: Now we all know – and covet – those bright, tooled leather bags from Missibaba but I’m sure few of you know that Missibaba Living is the next step in the evolution of Missi.

A small step in the décor direction at this stage, the Missibaba Living collection so far consists of scatter cushions, wallpaper and note books. All are a study of the colours and shapes that you would expect to find on a Missibaba bag, simply applied closer to home. I love the Scandinavian-inspired designs and the fact that the Missibaba signature is clear to see. Now I just need to learn to like scatter cushions.

At the same pop up, Moon Basket unveiled their new collection featuring bright flashes of neon, as well as the most exquisite range of woven bags in the same vibrant colour combinations.

Using a technique of dipping crocheted homeware objets such as bowls and lamp shades in resin, Ms Moonbasket Dani Le Roy has created a delicate design concept that is now sought after internationally – Moon Baskets are sold in Paris – and the neon range is certain to be a hit.

On a much bigger scale, happy news for Joburg residents is the opening this week of Kare Design at 14 Appel Road, in Kramerville, Sandton.

Just when you thought the Kramerville fad might be waning, along comes German-born Kare Design with its wide range of on-trend contemporary home furniture, lighting and accessories that is going to create a lot of excitement on the décor scene.

OMEGA

Never mind online shopping, Instagram shopping is a thing. A big thing. And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, ask one of the world’s leading watch brands. In what they now call #SpeedyTuesday, Omega last week sold 2,012 OMEGA Speedmaster Limited Edition 42 mm "Ultraman" watches on Instagram.

With the Speedmaster Ultraman priced at R90,300 on the Omega website, it’s not hard to work out that this was a particularly good day out for the luxury watch business.

The remarkable sale took place in under two hours (one hour, 53 minutes and 17 seconds, to be exact) and is certain to inspire many more luxury watch brands to pursue this relatively underexplored marketplace for luxury goods.

The Omega Ultraman watch is a tribute to the lead character in Japan’s Ultraman series. The watch’s orange hands matches the suits of the attach team in the series and as Ultraman was only able to stay in superhero-mode for 3 minutes, the minute subdial at 3 o'clock features the first 3 minutes picked-out in orange.
