Two Cape Town restaurants in top 100 of World’s 50 Best Restaurants list

In what comes at a time when the SA restaurant industry is in desperate need of good news, it was with great excitement that two SA restaurants, La Colombe and Fyn, were announced as the 81st and 92nd spots on the extended list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurant Top 100.

Coming in at 81, La Colombe moves up from its 114th spot at the 2019 awards. The award-winning Constantia eatery helmed by chefs Scot Kirton and James Gaag, is a regular feature on awards lists both locally and abroad. Their contemporary cuisine drawing from references across the globe is rooted in classic French cooking

A first-time entrant onto the list and making it after an impressive three years since opening, Fyn debuts at position 92. The brainchild of chef Peter Tempelhoff and Ashley Moss together with Jennifer Hugé, the Speaker’s Corner restaurant fuses the bounty and beauty of SA produce with the rigours of Japanese technique to create a truly unique dining experience.

Considered the Oscars of the culinary world, the awards were put on hold in 2020 owing to the pandemic and its devastating effect on the industry, instead focusing on the 50 Best for Recovery programme, which raised more than $1.29m and distributed grants to more than 200 restaurants, bars and nonprofit organisations in the food and drink sector.

Judged by a panel of more than 1,000 culinary experts, they provide a snapshot of some of the best destinations for unique culinary experiences, in addition to being a barometer for gastronomic trends around the globe.

The top 50 will be announced at The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2021 awards, sponsored by S Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, taking place  in the city of Antwerp in Flanders (the Flemish-speaking northern region of Belgium) on October 5.
